Principale centro abitato dell'entroterra dell'isola, Corte è la capitale storica e culturale della Corsica. Fu infatti scelta come capitale della Repubblica Corsa da Pasquale Paoli ereditando così il titolo di "città paolina". Dal 1981 è attiva in città l'università della Corsica mentre nella cittadella di Corte, dal 1997, è ospitato il museo della Corsica. Corte è il simbolo della resistenza della Corsica contro il dominio di Genova. Fu qui che venne organizzato il quartier generale corso nella guerra contro i genovesi, che durò ben 14 anni a partire dal 1755. La guerra di indipendenza fu vinta ma la libertà durò poco perché successivamente arrivarono i francesi ad occupare l’isola. Nonostante tutte le sue traversie storiche, Corte è rimasta il fulcro del sentimento nazionalista corso, ancora vivo in buona parte della popolazione. -
