Il Faro Mangiabarche si erge sull'omonimo scoglio a circa 400 m al largo dell'isola di Sant'Antioco. Tra l'isola di Sant'Antioco e lo scoglio del Faro sono presenti scogli e secche affioranti dal mare, che rappresentano ancora oggi una pericolosa insidia. A questo si aggiunge il forte vento di maestrale che d'inverno spira dall'Atlantico e che spinge le imbarcazione verso gli scogli, complici anche le correnti dello stretto tratto di mare.
