Harpy eagle – Aquila arpia Un rapace che sognavo di incontrare e fotografare da tantissimo tempo. La specie è in forte declino a causa della deforestazione e della caccia indiscriminata, che ne hanno drasticamente ridotto la popolazione. Anche i tempi di riproduzione sono estremamente lunghi: tra la deposizione dell'uovo e la crescita del piccolo trascorrono almeno quattro anni. Nell'immagine, il pulcino è costantemente vigilato dalla madre, che – salvo brevi voli – non lascia mai il nido incustodito. Al maschio spetta invece il compito di procurare il cibo, principalmente scimmie e bradipi, necessario a nutrire la femmina e a far crescere il nidiaceo. Raggiungere questo luogo remoto, nel Dipartimento del Meta in Colombia, è stata una vera avventura. Tra fuoristrada, attraversamenti di fiumi e un'infinita camminata, ho impiegato circa cinque ore per arrivare sulla montagna di fronte al nido, da cui, a una distanza di 55 metri, ho realizzato questo scatto. Il ritorno, sotto un vero diluvio, è stato meno faticoso grazie alla grande soddisfazione di aver immortalato la mitica aquila arpia e questo piccolo, che rappresenta una piccola ma grande speranza in un futuro pieno di incertezze.
