Come ricorda la lapide soprastante, la piccola fontana in marmo bianco fu realizzata da un autore ignoto nel 1774, al tempo del pontefice Clemente XIV, in occasione del restauro dell'Ospedale di San Rocco, costruito dalla Confraternita degli Osti e Barcaroli, che aveva in dotazione anche l'adiacente chiesa di San Rocco all'Augusteo. Il papa aveva infatti donato all'Ospedale due once dell'Acqua Vergine in cambio della costruzione di una fontanella pubblica. Il volto sorridente di un giovane, con il berretto tipico dei facchini del vicino porto fluviale di Ripetta (dove venivano scaricati soprattutto legna e vino provenienti dal Nord del Lazio), sporge da una valva di conchiglia; dalla bocca esce l'acqua, che si riversa in una piccola vasca semicircolare sospesa su scogli. Attraverso due cannelle alla base della vaschetta, l'acqua passa in un catino rettangolare che la immette in una botticella disposta orizzontalmente. La fontana, alimentata dall'Acqua Vergine, presenta elementi comuni con la cinquecentesca fontana del Facchino di via Lata, di cui probabilmente costituisce una versione tardo-settecentesca. Originariamente era addossata alla facciata di Palazzo Valdambrini, oggi non più esistente: alla fine degli anni Trenta, quando la zona fu oggetto di lavori per isolare il Mausoleo di Augusto e fare posto a piazza Augusto Imperatore, la fontana venne smontata e ricostruita in una grande nicchia rettangolare ricavata nell'arco che fiancheggia la chiesa di San Rocco.
