Il castello, il più vasto complesso fortificato del Trentino, si estende sulla sommità del dosso omonimo, occupando una posizione di grande rilievo strategico per il controllo della Vallagarina e delle vie di comunicazione tra l'Impero Germanico e la penisola italiana. Di origini medievali, la fortezza subì nella prima metà del Cinquecento una profonda ristrutturazione che le conferì l'attuale aspetto.
