Il Salar di Antofalla è situato ad una altitudine di 3600/3900 mt sul livello del mare nella provincia di Catamarca. Questo deserto si estende per oltre 100 chilometri rendendolo uno di più lunghi e isolati della regione. La sua superficie è di circa 500 kmq. ed è dominata dall' imponente vulcano omonimo (altezza circa 6400 mt). L'area è estremamente arida, priva di vegetazione e acqua, e quasi completamente disabitata eccetto la piccola comunità indigena di Antofalla (piccolo villaggio di 60 anime ). Il salar è anche un'area di riserva geologico-mineraria con possibilità estrattiva per la presenza di borati, litio e potassio. Data la sua inaccessibilità e il suo isolamento, la regione non ha strade e rimane una delle regioni più remote dell'Argentina.
