Martedi 5 Agosto dopo una bellissima mattinata ricca di foto all'aereoporto di Amsterdam decidiamo di andare a visitare tutti i famosi villaggi attorno ad Amsterdam: Marken, Monnickendam ed Edam. Una bella giornata con buone foto ricca di vento e con il classico cielo con nuvole a pecorella e giochi di luci ed ombre. Buona visione. Monnickendam è una città nella provincia olandese dell'Olanda Settentrionale. Fa parte del comune di Waterland e sorge sulla costa del Markermeer, circa 8 km a sud-est di Purmerend. Ottenne i diritti di città nel 1355 e fu danneggiata dagli incendi del 1499 e del 1513. Monnikendam era anche il nome di alcune navi da guerra costruite nel porto omonimo durante le guerre anglo-olandesi. La città fu fondata dai monaci, il nome Monnickendam si traduce come 'diga del monaco'. Monnickendam era un comune separato fino al 1991, quando fu fuso con Waterland. Sebbene oggi sia un piccolo villaggio di pescatori, nei secoli precedenti era un importante porto. Possiede una pesa del XVII secolo , un tempo utilizzata da mercanti e funzionari portuali, e un campanile che risale al 1591. Il governo olandese ha sovvenzionato questo sviluppo con 6.420.240 euro, con la speranza di creare 700 abitazioni e ulteriori spazi commerciali per alleviare la crisi demografica e fornire un impulso per un'ulteriore crescita economica. Nel 2001, la città di Monnickendam contava 9.546 abitanti. L'area edificata della città era di 1,34 km quadrati e conteneva 3.766 residenze.
