Venerdi 8 Agosto abbiamo passato una bella giornata di sole nell'affascinante città di Rotterdam; città moderna molto vivibile e multietnica. Capitale per le architetture moderne, si distingue per un affascinante sky line che si può ammirare dal modernissimo Erasmusbrug. Non mancano gli scorci storici come il Delfshaven a cui è diedicata questa foto. In questo molo ci siamo gustati delle ottime birre del Birrificio storico Pelgrim. Buona lettura e buona visione. A circa 60 chilometri da Amsterdam e ad una trentina dalle rive del Mare del Nord, Rotterdam è una città che non finisce mai di stupire grazie alla sua inesauribile vivacità. Non mancano le contraddizioni, come il fatto di possedere il più grande porto d'Europa pur non essendo direttamente affacciata sul mare. Il nome deriva da dam, piccola diga, costruita sul fiume Rotte, peculiarità che ha consentito al piccolo insediamento di diventare, nel corso dei secoli, la città che tutti oggi conosciamo. Quasi completamente distrutta nel 1940, durante i bombardamenti della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, Rotterdam è oggi uno dei centri più all'avanguardia e trendy a livello internazionale, dove il design e l'architettura hanno trovato terreno fertile, ridisegnato il profilo della città e dato vita ad uno skyline modernissimo, come dimostrano i grattacieli di Kop van Zuid e l'Erasmusburg progettato da UNStudio, le celebri case cubiche di Piet Blom e il De Rotterdam. Internazionale e dinamica, conta diversi club e hotel tra i più cool del mondo dislocati nelle varie zone della città. Uno dei quartieri più conosciuti ed accoglienti è Delfshaven, dove regna ancora l'atmosfera che caratterizzava la città prima della guerra poiché è stato risparmiato dai bombardamenti. Tappa imprescindibile durante una passeggiata in questo quartiere è la Chiesa dei Padri Pellegrini, dove si riunirono i pellegrini prima di attraversare insieme l'oceano, nel 1620, per raggiungere l'America. E proprio quest'anno ricorrono i 400 anni di questo epico viaggio, motivo in più per lasciarsi avvolgere dalle atmosfere dell'antico porto fluviale che oggi fa parte dell'area metropolitana di Rotterdam ed è una delle poche vestigia storiche ancora conservate in questa moderna città. Il viaggio dei Padri Pellegrini ha infatti avuto un ruolo decisivo nel XVII secolo poiché ha segnato la futura nascita degli Stati Uniti: si trattava di puritani inglesi rifugiati in Olanda che, partendo da qui contribuirono a creare quello che era il Nuovo Mondo. Successivamente alla loro partenza, questo porto olandese del XIV secolo ha ospitato per secoli migliaia di persone provenienti da tutto il mondo, rendendo questo angolo un vero e proprio crogiolo di culture. Tra le attività organizzate per ricordare questo evento, spicca la riproduzione del famoso veliero del XVII secolo Mayflower che portò i Padri Pellegrini in America. Salendo a bordo della nave Have Maen ormeggiata nel porto di Delfshaven, si può ripercorrere tutta la storia degli esploratori da vicino. Vengono inoltre organizzate escursioni che ricreano il percorso dei Padri Pellegrini da Leiden a Delfshaven, così come crociere lungo il canale di Delsfhaven a bordo della storica imbarcazione Hollandse Vloot. Inoltre la Chiesa dei Padri Pellegrini ospita una mostra sugli eventi storici con testi, immagini e display interattivo. La macchina digitale del tempo e l'applicazione TimeTransit riportano il visitatore nella Delfshaven del 1620 presentando storie e aneddoti. La chiesa si presenta come una semplice e piccola struttura riconoscibile per la piccola torre con il carillon: la facciata attuale risale al 1761, anno in cui venne modificato l'impianto originario del 1417. Anche gli interni sono semplici con il nuovo tetto in legno simile alla carena di una nave rovesciata e le finestre in vetro colorato. Delfshaven è anche il luogo in cui alcuni volontari lavorano alla ricostruzione della De Delft, una nave da guerra del diciottesimo secolo: visitandone il cantiere si scopre anche la collezione del museo annesso. Il tour del quartiere, per il quale sono stati creati diversi itinerari gratuiti percorribili in bicicletta o a piedi, non è completo se non si assapora una birra presso il birrificio cittadino De Pelgrim, dove è possibile gustare l'autentica birra di Rotterdam e apprendere tutto sulla fabbricazione della birra. C'è anche il Museo olandese del flipper, una delle visite più curiose di questo quartiere, che ancora oggi mantiene il suo carattere e la sua identità, riunendo persone di tutte le culture.
