Santa Maria di Collemaggio a L'Aquila è la basilica in cui venne incoronato Papa Celestino V, il pontefice del "gran rifiuto". Ha subito, specie al suo interno, parecchi crolli e ricostruzioni, dovuti ai numerosi terremoti che si sono succeduti nel tempo. Ora la facciata romanico-gotica è ritornata agli antichi splendori e anche l'interno è stato ripulito dalle superfetazioni barocche, riacquistando quella solennità e severità che ben si addice al luogo.
