Prende il nome dalla famiglia lucchese dei Burlamacchi, forse perché esso attraversava dei suoi terreni o perché fu riaperto un fosso sulle antiche tracce delle Fosse Papiriane a spesa di questa famiglia. È l'emissario navigabile del Lago di Massaciuccoli.
