Lasciato il villaggio di Purmamarca iniziamo a salire verso le terre alte. Prima sosta: “ Salinas Grandes”. Questa è una vasta distesa di sale situata ad una altitudine di 3450 mt. con una estensione di circa 212 Kmq . Questa distesa di sale ancora in fase di estrazione, offre un affascinante paesaggio lunare di un bianco abbagliante. L'origine delle Salinas Grandes risale a un lungo periodo, collocato temporalmente tra 5 e 10 milioni di anni fa. Durante questo lungo periodo, il bacino di questa salina era ricoperto da acque ricche di sali provenienti dall'attività vulcanica. La graduale evaporazione di queste acque salate continentali ha dato origine a questa salina, che presenta una crosta il cui spessore medio è di 30 cm. Il sale prodotto nelle Salinas Grandes viene utilizzato principalmente per la produzione alimentare e per scopi industriali e viene esportato in paesi di tutto il mondo. Di origine vulcanica e non marina, il sale può essere consumato solo dopo un trattamento con iodio.
