Questi uccelli terricoli del sottobosco neotropicale, dalle tonalità color terra, eretti su lunghe zampe e muniti di code molto corte, si muovono nella foresta a salti flessibili alla ricerca delle loro prede, gli insetti. Le pitte formichiere hanno aspetto e abitudini simili a quelli delle pitte del Vecchio Mondo, e a dispetto del loro nome nessuna di queste specie sembra avere un'associazione particolarmente forte con le formiche. La maggior parte degli aspetti della loro biologia rimane misteriosa e c'è ancora molto da scoprire su questi caratteristici uccelli. L'aspetto della pitta formichiera capocastano è quello di una pallina paffuta su dei bastoncini, con un piumaggio molto appariscente che rende questa specie inconfondibile nel suo areale: testa rossiccia brillante, gola bianca e parti inferiori striate. Questi uccelli sono molto timidi e raramente avvistati allo scoperto e vengono più spesso individuati per i loro richiami fischiati. Si trova dalla zona subtropicale fino alla zona temperata delle Ande, all'interno delle foreste. Caldas, Colombia, Agosto 2025.
