Lo sciacallo dalla gualdrappa (Lupulella mesomelas), noto anche come sciacallo dal dorso argentato, è un canide lupino originario dell'Africa subsahariana, presente in Namibia. Ha un corpo snello simile a una volpe, con pelliccia fulva e una distintiva sella nera sul dorso e sulla coda. Questo animale è monogamo e vive in coppia o in piccoli gruppi familiari, con i cuccioli che spesso aiutano i genitori ad allevare le nuove generazioni. In Namibia, in particolare nel deserto del Namib, è noto per una curiosa abitudine: si nutre non solo di piccoli animali e carcasse, ma anche di un frutto simile a un cocomero prodotto da una pianta locale, tanto da "fare pipì" sopra ai frutti per tenerli lontani da altri animali mentre aspettano che maturino. La sua dieta è varia e comprende roditori, lepri, insetti, piccoli mammiferi, carogne, e persino uccelli marini e pesci lungo la costa namibiana. È territoriale e comunica con ululati, latrati e altri vocalizzi per difendere il proprio territorio e la coppia scaccia ferocemente gli intrusi. Vive in zone aride con scarsa vegetazione e vasti spazi aperti. Qui ripreso nel grande parco di Etosha, ma lo avevo trovato anche tra le dune del Namib ! in mezzo al Bush ! grazie in anticipo per ogni visita e commento.
