Deserto del Namib, Parco Nazionale Namib-Naukluft. Le grandi dune. Tra i meravigliosi paesaggi e attività che questo paese può offrire, scalare le dune del Deserto del Namib all'alba è una delle esperienze più belle ed indimenticabili di un viaggio in Namibia: il paesaggio è mozzafiato, con le dune color albicocca, ocra o rosse, a seconda del momento e della luce del giorno, in costante e silenzioso movimento grazie ai venti che spirano incessantemente. Il deserto del Namib, considerato come uno dei deserti più antichi della terra e, allo stesso tempo, uno dei più accessibili del pianeta, occupa la parte costiera della Namibia occidentale, affacciata sull'Oceano Atlantico. Si estende dal fiume Hoanib a nord del paese fino alla città di Lüderitz nel sud, e dall'Oceano Atlantico a ovest fino a quella che viene comunemente definita la Scarpata del Namib a est. Da nord a sud l'estensione complessiva è di circa 1300 km mentre da est a ovest varia fra 100 e 200 km. La superficie complessiva si aggira intorno ai 55.000 km². Una delle caratteristiche di questo deserto è la presenza di diversi tipi di dune, che rendono il paesaggio ancora più interessante. Esistono, infatti, dune definite paraboliche, (scolpite dal vento, ritenute le più stabili e quelle più ricche di vegetazione), dune trasversali, (che si trovano soprattutto lungo la costa e sono perpendicolari ai venti che prevalentemente soffiano da sud); dune lineari (che si formano grazie ai venti stagionali per cui cambiano la conformazione a seconda della direzione dei venti), dune a mezzaluna, (considerate le più mobili di tutte, le quali si spostano sempre in una unica direzione assumendo la caratteristica forma della mezzaluna), dune a stella, (esposte a tutti i venti e che si estendono in tutte le direzioni per cui, viste dall'alto, assumono la caratteristica conformazione a stella),e, infine, dune a collinetta, (le più piccole di tutte, che si formano di solito nei pressi dei corsi di acqua e sono delimitate dalla vegetazione esistente).
