Originaria dell'Ariège, un dipartimento dei Pirenei francesi, da quasi quarant'anni questa razza è allevata in Italia e nel decennio scorso, ha ottenuto il riconoscimento ufficiale dal ministero dell'Agricoltura che ha istituito un apposito registro. A portare, nel 1976, il primo Mèrens in provincia di Cuneo, fu Cecco de Matteis, dopo un lungo viaggio a piedi dall'Ariège. L'animale si chiamava Kobolt ma fu ribattezzato Moru per il classico manto morello e diffuse la specie nella Granda, diventando simbolo della rinascita delle valli occitane. Lo si vede pascolare liberamente in piccoli branchi dalla primavera all'autunno.
