Il Buddhismo Theravada è la religione di stato e una componente fondamentale della cultura thailandese. Influenza profondamente la vita quotidiana, con i monaci che godono di grande rispetto. I templi buddisti sono elementi importanti dell'architettura e dell'arte thailandese. I thailandesi spesso praticano donazioni e offerte ai templi, sia per motivi religiosi che per la pratica di buone azioni e meditazione. Il karma è un concetto centrale, dove le azioni di una persona determinano il suo futuro, e le persone ricche sono spesso viste come persone che hanno accumulato buon karma in vite precedenti. La meditazione è una pratica comune per raggiungere la saggezza. La cerimonia in cui la gente in Thailandia dona cibo ai monaci buddisti al mattino presto si chiama Tak Bat. Si tratta di un'offerta di cibo, spesso riso, che i fedeli fanno ai monaci che camminano in fila per le strade per raccogliere le elemosine. E' un'occasione per i credenti di accumulare meriti karmici e per i monaci di ricevere il sostentamento quotidiano. La cerimonia si svolge prima dell'alba, creando un'atmosfera solenne e rispettosa. I monaci, avvolti nelle loro tuniche arancioni, camminano in silenzio e i fedeli, spesso in ginocchio, depongono il cibo nelle loro ciotole.
