Scusate se insisto con qualche altra immagine di questo spettacolare monumento, ma credo ne valga la pena. Il Convento de Cristo a Tomar fu fondato nel 1160 da Gualdim Pais, maestro dei Templari in Portogallo, come sede dell'Ordine. Dopo la soppressione dei Templari nel 1312, il re Dinis creò l'Ordine di Cristo, che ne ereditò beni e funzioni, mantenendo il convento come centro spirituale. Nel XV secolo, sotto il principe Enrico il Navigatore, l'Ordine divenne fondamentale per l'espansione marittima portoghese e il convento fu ampliato con elementi manuelini, ispirati al mare e all'epoca delle scoperte. Nel XVI secolo, con re João III, l'edificio fu trasformato in un monastero regolare con nuovi chiostri e ambienti rinascimentali. Dopo un lungo declino, il convento fu abbandonato nel XIX secolo con l'abolizione degli ordini religiosi. Restaurato nel XX secolo, oggi è patrimonio UNESCO e uno dei monumenti più emblematici della storia portoghese.
