Rauðaskál, soprannominato "the apple crater" emerge splendidamente da una landa desertica di cenere e roccia vulcanica. Il rosso acceso delle rocce sulla sua sommità potrebbe incutere timore, ma non è lui l'elemento più pericoloso della scena... Infatti, sullo sfondo si staglia scuro, ancora parzialmente innevato, lo stratovulcano Hekla, imprevedibile e distruttivo, tanto che dei cartelli avvertono i visitatori che entrare in quest'area è a loro rischio e pericolo in quanto è attesa una nuova eruzione di Hekla, ma non si riesce a prevederla con sufficiente anticipo.
