Pinacoteca di Brera E' il capolavoro più amato e popolare di Hayez, caposcuola del Romanticismo in Italia. Fu esposto nel 1859 alla mostra di Brera che celebrava la fine della II guerra di Indipendenza e la nascita della nazione italiana, favorita dal sostegno della Francia a fianco dei Savoia. Il pubblico si entusiasmò per l'audacia del bacio ma riconobbe anche il messaggio patriottico dei colori: le calze rosse e la giubba verde, accostate alla veste azzurra e bianca evocano le bandiere di Italia e Francia.
