L'afide e' una "pecora' delle formiche!!!! Gli afidi, che vivono in stretta simbiosi con le formiche, si sono adattati a spruzzare un liquido dolce (che produce) direttamente nella bocca della formica dopo che questa le ha massaggiato l'addome con le antenne. Durante l'estate, le formiche nere, da sole, in una colonia di circa 20.000 insetti, raccolgono fino a 5 litri di latte dolce. Se capita che gli afidi che si sono riprodotti si trovino in difficoltà nel loro vecchio nido, le formiche li spostano con cura altrove. Alcune specie di formiche costruiscono ripari per i loro "reparti", coprendo i luoghi in cui si raccolgono gli afidi con terra e polvere di legno incollata. All'interno di queste case, i cui ingressi e uscite sono sotto il controllo delle formiche guardiane, gli afidi sono protetti dalle intemperie e dagli attacchi di altri insettivori. Ma se il nemico riesce comunque a distruggere le pareti, le formiche pastore raccolgono prima di tutto i goffi afidi e li nascondono in un luogo appartato. Gli afidi che si insediano sulle radici degli alberi dipendono ancora di più dalle formiche rispetto ai loro simili che vivono nel terreno. Le formiche fanno tutto il lavoro più duro per loro, scavando gallerie fino alle radici, prendendosi cura delle loro uova e "suddividendo" i piccoli appena nati sulle radici degli alberi non occupati.
