Mi trovo a 2000 metri, al margine di uno splendido bosco di larice verde brillante, proprio dove la prateria alpina si allarga e risale verso le creste e, immerso nel fieno di fine giugno che colora e profuma l'aria sottile di lupinella, achillea e genziana, sono circondato da una mandria di bruno alpine. Attendo paziente che le placide vacche seguite da tre giovani custodi, abbandonino l'ombra dei larici per poter avvicinare una vecchia pianta segnata dal fulmine sulla quale il picchio nero ha sapientemente ricavato una piccola cavità. Quando finalmente le mucche, con i loro “rudun” (campanacci), si sono allontanate dal bosco, atteso di ascoltare in lontananza i fischi delle marmotte ad anticipare le grida vivaci dei tre pastorelli, mi dirigo cauto verso la cavità. Quassù, a cavallo di San Giovanni, le giornate sono lunghe, calde e faticose tanto per i malgari che per i pulli della civetta capogrosso che, emozionato, ritrovo paciosi e in ottima salute. Che bello! Forse si annoiano un po' a starsene li in attesa degli adulti; ma presto, col favore della notte, arriverà anche la pappa e tra qualche giorno sarà il bosco la loro nuova casa.
