La chiesa medievale di San Nicola in Carcere si erge nella zona dell'antico Foro Olitorio, nel luogo in cui, nel periodo della Roma repubblicana, sorgevano tre templi, trasformati in prigione durante il Medioevo (da qui il nome "in carcere"). Costruita nel 1128 (come ricorda l'iscrizione sulla facciata), fu dedicata a San Nicola, poiché nell'area viveva la comunità greca particolarmente devota al santo. La piccola piazza del Foro Olitorio, con al centro i tre templi di Giano, di Speranza e di Giunone Sospita, era adibita a mercato delle erbe e delle verdure. La chiesa fu costruita prima del secolo XI da Papa Pasquale II e fu quasi interamente riedificata ed arricchita nel 1599, ad opera dell'architetto Giacomo Della Porta.
