Di fronte alla basilica di San Marco nello slargo che si affaccia su piazza Venezia, in un angolo, sorge una graziosa fontana in travertino realizzata nella seconda metà del ventennio su disegno dell'architetto e scultore romano Pietro Lombardi, è alimentata dall'Acquedotto dell'Acqua Marcia. Il rione Pigna dove è collocata quest'opera, prende il nome dalla originaria presenza di una grande statua di bronzo a forma di pigna, risalente all'epoca medioevale, la quale attualmente è situata nel Cortile della Pigna in Vaticano e funge anch'essa da fontana. A seguito dello spostamento della statua bronzea nel cortile del Vaticano si decise quindi di realizzare questa fontana, in misura molto più ridotte rispetto alla precedente, da inserire nel rione quale simbolo dello stesso. L'opera del Lombardi è costituita nella parte centrale da uno stelo all'interno di un piccolo bacino con due corolle di tulipani stilizzati che sostengono una pigna. L'acqua sgorga da diversi zampilli laterali e viene raccolta prima nel piccolo bacino centrale e poi confluisce nelle due vaschette a terra, costituite da lastre di travertino. Infine, delimitano i confini della fontana quattro colonnine basse di marmo, poste agli angoli della stessa.
