“Sbarcato dal traghetto andai a piedi fino all'Albert Dock. Dopo aver accantonato l'iniziale progetto di prosciugarlo e trasformarlo in un parcheggio-sembra un miracolo a volte che qualcosa di questo povero paese in rovina sia stato risparmiato- la zona è stata ripulita e sistemata, i vecchi capannoni sono convertiti in uffici, appartamenti e ristoranti, a beneficio di chi va in giro con un telefonino nella ventiquattr'ore. Al suo interno ospita anche una sperduta succursale della Tate Gallery e il Meresyde Maritime Museum. Adoro il museo marittimo, non solo perchè è ben progettato, ma anche perchè trasmette un po' della gloria di Liverpool all'epoca in cui era un porto famoso, ovvero quando il mondo abbondava di attività produttive e maestosità imprenditoriale, due cose che oggi sembrano andate completamente perdute. Come mi piacerebbe aver vissuto in un'epoca in cui si poteva passeggiare lungo i pontili e assistere alle manovre di carico e scarico di grandi balle di cotone e pesanti sacchi marroni di caffè e spezie, e quando i viaggi per mare coinvolgevano centinaia di persone, marinai e portuali e folle di passeggeri eccitati.” Paul Bryson da Notizie da un'isoletta.
