Lo straordinario gruppo scultoreo dei grifi di Ascoli Satriano (Foggia) – rappresentante due grifoni nell'atto di azzannare un cerbiatto a terra – faceva probabilmente parte di una tomba aristocratica dell'antica Ausculum, oggetto di saccheggio e deportazione illegale negli anni Settanta del Novecento. L'opera, scolpita nel marmo di Aphrodisias di Caria (l'attuale Turchia) nel IV secolo a.C., era destinata a sostenere una mensa e mostra ancora sulla propria superficie tracce dell'originaria policromia, con dettagli in rosa, giallo, porpora, azzurro, bianco, verde: il giallo era impiegato sul corpo del cerbiatto e sul bordo interno delle ali dei grifi, l'azzurro sul bordo esterno delle stesse ali, sfumato con il bianco che definiva anche le solcature delle piume, il verde si trovava sulla base (ad evocare il contesto naturale della scena), il rosa nelle narici delle bestie e all'attacco delle piume al corpo, il rosso porpora sulla testa e sul muso del cerbiatto, forse a raffigurare le macchie del pelo.
