Il vulcano fà parte di una serie di fenomeni geofisici ed idrogeologici posti nel "Triangolo Afar", nella depressione dancalica, tra Etiopia, Eritrea e Gibuti. La depressione (in alcuni punti oltre -100 metri di altitudine slm) è a sua volta espressione della spaccatura presente nell'Africa orientale che và sotto il nome di Rift Valley.
