L'Appia Antica fu progettata nel 312 a.C. dal censore Appio Claudio Cieco: il suo intento era quello di far realizzare un asse viario che collegasse velocemente Roma a Capua per il movimento delle truppe verso sud durante la Seconda Guerra Sannitica (326-304 a.C.). In seguito, il tracciato fu prolungato fino al porto di Brindisi per avere un collegamento diretto con la Grecia, l'Oriente e l'Egitto, per le spedizioni militari, i viaggi e i commerci... Aveva inizio a Porta Capena, nei pressi del Circo Massimo, per proseguire verso sud con un tracciato lineare e agevole fino a raggiungere Capua e successivamente Brindisi...
