Nato a cavallo fra gli anni Ottanta e Novanta, lo steampunk è un movimento artistico e culturale che ha come precursori letterari il Jules Verne di Ventimila leghe sotto i mari e H. G. Wells. Tra i suoi capolavori La macchina della realtà (1990), di William Gibson e Bruce Sterling, romanzo in cui il protagonista Charles Babbage nel 1885 inventa un computer meccanico, che funziona senza elettricità.- Il futuro nel passato - Lo steampunk (“steam” significa vapore, fonte energetica tipica della Rivoluzione industriale) gioca con anacronismi e tecnologie, immaginando “come sarebbe il passato se il futuro fosse accaduto prima”. La Londra vittoriana è l'ambientazione favorita dagli autori steampunk, che popolano la città di automobili a vapore e computer con tastiere in ottone e cuoio.- - Eye pod vittoriano - Il genere ha trovato terreno fertile nella moda (corsetti con le borchie, maschere antigas in pelle) e nelle arti visive: in una mostra al Museo della Storia della Scienza di Oxford erano esposte opere di artisti steampunk come l'"eye pod", corrispettivo ottocentesco del lettore mp3, realizzato con una tromba da grammofono e un carillon sormontati da un finto occhio (eye, appunto).
