Venerdì 9 Agosto. A destra Roma cosi potente e ricca a sinistra i Pitti cosi selvaggi e rozzi. Voi da che parte state? Io ho già deciso e se un pochino mi conoscete sapete già dove. Fare trekking lungo l'Hadrian's Wall è stato uno dei momenti più belli e toccanti del mio viaggio. Un momento intenso di storia che per un appassionato come mei ti rimane dentro; e pensare che non era stato programmato, anzi era rimandato a qualche altro viaggio nel nord dell'Inghilterra. Ed invece dato il brutto tempo sui laghi ho deciso di cambiare destinazione anche se di un centinaio di km. Devo dire che questa esperienza ha valso il viaggio dell'estate 2024. Si può camminare lungo il muro per un centinaio di km io ne ho fatti tre, ma che emozioni e devo dirvi che avevo la pelle d'oca. Insieme a me solo un vento fortissimo che rompeva il silenzio assordante. Il Vallo di Adriano era una imponente fortificazione in pietra, fatta costruire dall'imperatore romano Adriano nella prima metà del II secolo come confine con le tribù dei Pitti, che segnava il confine tra la provincia romana della Britannia e la Caledonia. Questa fortificazione divideva l'isola in due parti. Il vallo di Adriano faceva parte del limes romano e venne costruito per prevenire le incursioni delle tribù dei Pitti che calavano da nord. Il nome viene ancor oggi talvolta usato per indicare il confine tra Scozia e Inghilterra, anche se il muro non segue il confine attuale. Il muro rappresentò il confine più settentrionale dell'Impero romano in Britannia per gran parte del periodo di dominio romano su queste terre; era inoltre il confine più pesantemente fortificato dell'intero impero. Oltre al suo impiego come fortificazione militare, si ritiene che le porte di accesso attraverso il vallo siano servite come dogane per permettere la tassazione delle merci. Una significativa porzione del vallo è ancora esistente, in particolare la parte centrale, e per gran parte della sua lunghezza il percorso del muro può essere seguito a piedi, e costituisce un'importante attrazione turistica dell'Inghilterra settentrionale. Il Vallo di Adriano è diventato patrimonio dell'umanità dell'UNESCO nel 1987.Il Vallo di Adriano corre per 117 km da Wallsend, sul fiume Tyne, alla costa del Solway Firth. La A69 segue il percorso del muro da dove la strada inizia, a Newcastle upon Tyne, e fino a Carlisle, quindi prosegue attorno alla costa settentrionale della Cumbria. Il muro è completamente in territorio inglese, e rimane a sud del confine della Scozia per 15 km a ovest e per 110 km a est. Buon visione
