Il drago, simbolo di Lubiana, troneggia fieramente sullo stemma cittadino e sul Ponte dei draghi. La leggenda narra che Lubiana sia stata fondata dall'eroe mitologico greco Giasone, che rubò il vello d'oro del re Aites, e poi con l'equipaggio degli Argonauti scappò sulla nave Argo attraverso il Mar Nero fino al Danubio e risalì il fiume Sava fino al fiume Ljubljanica. Lì gli Argonauti smontarono la nave, la trasportarono fino al mare Adriatico, dove fu ricomposta e con essa fecero ritorno in Grecia. Sulla strada per il mare, alla sorgente del fiume Ljubljanica, si fermarono in un grande lago e in una palude dove viveva un drago. Giasone affrontò il drago, lo sconfisse e lo uccise. Quando nel 1900 l'architetto Jurij Zaninovi? costruì il Ponte giubilare di Francesco Giuseppe I, inizialmente come ornamento erano previste delle sculture di grifoni.
