ll Civico Tempio di San Sebastiano si trova nelle vicinanze del Duomo di Milano lungo via Torino 28. Ha una struttura circolare risalente al '500 quando San Carlo Borromeo volle erigerlo come "ex voto" per il termine della peste del 1576 che colpì duramente la città di Milano. Fu infatti costruita all'inizio del 1577 e consacrata nel 1616, voluta come atto votivo. Fu dedicato a San Sebastiano proprio perché santo protettore dalla peste. All'interno è possibile ammirare diversi dipinti del 600. Nella chiesa sono presenti quattro altari laterali, due per lato. Nell'altare nella prima nicchia di sinistra si può ammirare una copia della pala d'altare di un San Sebastiano di Vincenzo Foppa del 1490, l'originale Chiesetta di San Tranquillino si conserva al Castello Sforzesco. L'altare maggiore è della seconda metà del diciottesimo secolo ed è ornato da un grande santuario intagliato e dorato. Nell'altare nella seconda nicchia di sinistra si può ammirare La Pietà, un'opera neoclassica di Benedetto Cacciatori mentre volgendo lo sguardo verso l'alto gli affreschi della cupola hanno per tema "Il Mistero della Redenzione" e parte dei profeti e delle sibille sul tamburo sono opera di Agostino Comerio e risalgono al 1833. Civico o religioso Già il suo nome fa capire che c'è qualcosa di ambiguo, è un luogo civile o religioso? Il Civico Tempio di San Sebastiano ha entrambi gli status infatti sin dalla sua costruzione è sempre stato conteso tra la Chiesa e lo Stato di Milano. Secondo recenti documenti storici fu infatti il marchese di Ayamonte, allora governatore di Milano, a chiedere al vicario di provvisione Giovanni Battista Capra di promuovere un voto per chiedere la fine della peste che tormentava la città da molti mesi e solo successivamente Carlo Borromeo si inserì nel progetto invocando le recenti norme che regolavano i rapporti tra Chiesa e Stato milanese.chiesa di san sebastiano Il progetto fu così seguito da Carlo Borromeo che lo fece realizzare da suoi uomini di fiducia anche se venne edificato dal governo milanese e non dalla curia.
