Una fusione perfetta tra cielo, terra e mare: il Centro Botín di Santander incarna pienamente questa descrizione. Realizzato dal maestro Renzo Piano, architetto italiano autore di alcuni degli edifici più iconici al mondo – dal Centre Pompidou di Parigi allo Shard di Londra, dall'Auditorium del Parco della Musica a Roma alla sede del New York Times – si tratta di uno spazio dedicato all'arte ed alla cultura, fortemente voluto dal presidente del Banco Santander Emilio Botín (1934-2014) e finanziato dalla Fondazione Botín. Il Centro, inaugurato nel giugno 2017, è situato in un'area strategica, a ridosso del centro storico e dei giardini Pereda. Posizionato nella baia fra il parco ed il mare, si trova per metà ancorato alla terraferma e per metà sospeso sull'acqua. Il suo scopo è quello di restituire alla città la vasta area portuale del molo di Albareda ristabilendo, allo stesso tempo, un accesso pedonale al mare.
