NGC 7331 (nota anche come C 30) è una galassia a spirale visibile nella costellazione di Pegaso. Da notare la tenue nebulosità di fondo , la IFN . Il termine fu coniato da Steve Mandel che le definì come "nebulose di alta latitudine galattica che sono illuminate non da una singola stella (come lo sono la maggior parte delle nebulose nel piano della Galassia) ma dall'energia proveniente dal flusso integrato di tutte le stelle della Via Lattea". Di conseguenza, queste nebulose sono incredibilmente deboli e richiedono ore di esposizione per essere catturate. Queste nebulosità , una componente importante del mezzo interstellare, sono composte da particelle di polvere, idrogeno, monossido di carbonio e altri elementi."[1] Sono particolarmente prominenti nella direzione dei poli celesti nord e sud. La vasta nebulosa vicina al polo celeste sud è MW9, comunemente conosciuta come il Serpente Celeste Meridionale.[2]
