Terzo giorno, terzo incontro, stesso posto, come se ci fossimo dati appuntamento, questo splendido leopardo e noi due. Eravamo a Bitterpan, piccolo campo molto “wild” e remoto nel Kgalagadi, parte meridionale del deserto del Kalahari, raggiungibile con ca 50 km di dune e altrettante per uscirne, a senso unico. Avevamo notizia di un avvistamento di leopardo con preda e, arrivati gli unici otto ospiti del campo e sicuri, quindi, di non incrociare nessuno per strada, abbiamo avuto il permesso di risalirla per cercarlo. Ed eccolo lì, creatura stupenda, vicino all'albero su cui aveva issato la sua preda, un piccolo (si fa per dire…) di orice. Era ancora intatto e sapevamo che sarebbe tornato per un paio di giorni per mangiarlo. Ci ha concesso non poco del suo tempo, gironzolando incuriosito intorno alla nostra macchina e marcandola. Ogni tanto sembrava voler allontanarsi ma in realtà ci osservava un po' più da lontano e poi tornava all'albero. Un incontro indimenticabile, il più incredibile ed emozionante che abbia mai fatto.
