Sa Genti Arrubia, come sono chiamati i fenicotteri rosa in Sardegna, vive nell'isola ormai da generazioni grazie alle zone umide e poco affollate che sono il giusto habitat per questi specialissimi volatili. Si spostano in gruppi alquanto numerosi e sono molto timidi e paurosi. I fenicotteri rosa trovano in Sardegna, tra i vari molluschi, insetti acquatici e piccoli crostacei di cui si nutrono, il gamberetto rosa Artemia Salina che procura alle penne il caratteristico colore che varia dal bianco al rosa più o meno intenso . Cagliari è l'unica città dove i fenicotteri rosa nidificano in modo stabile. Ci sono esemplari stanziali da 40 anni. La popolazione stanziale dei fenicotteri in Italia è triplicata negli ultimi anni e preferisce la Sardegna. Si sta infatti tipicizzando il "flamingo sardus". Le prime settimane di giugno, quando questi bellissimi volatili decidono di fermarsi a nidificare tingendo di rosa l'intera area e durante l'inverno, quando si riposano in attesa della primavera e del periodo della nidificazione, sono i periodi dell'anno più belli per vedere i fenicotteri rosa in Sardegna. Il rito di corteggiamento di gruppo, in cui i maschi eseguono vere e proprie danze delle ali e del collo cercando di piacere alla partner, avviene verso la fine dell'inverno e l'inizio della primavera. Il nome di Flamingo fu appunto dato loro dagli spagnoli in seguito a questo ballo della seduzione che sembrerebbe un flamenco. I piccoli dei fenicotteri, i pulli, nascono d'estate e sono pronti a volare all'inizio dell'autunno, unendosi al volo meravigliosamente roseo degli adulti del gruppo. «Uccelli mai veduti, con le ali iridate, si sollevano dallo stagno, come sgorgassero dall'acqua, disegnando nel cielo una specie di arcobaleno: forse un miraggio».
