La cripta è la parte più antica della chiesa. Vi si accede attraverso due scale poste nelle navatelle. Attraverso un portale si accede ad un corridoio le cui volte sono sorrette da colonne addossate dai capitelli scolpiti. Uno dei capitelli presenta un volto umano rozzamente scolpito tra tralci; gli altri sono ricoperti con motivi stilizzati. Si accede poi ad un piccolo locale a due navate di funzione ignota (forse un battistero) attraverso il quale si accede alla cripta. La cripta riprende la pianta del presbiterio ed è divisa in nove navate da 28 colonne in parte di spoglio, probabilmente costruita nell'XI secolo, presenta volte a crociera con ventotto colonne di spoglio provenienti da edifici romani o alto medievali come si intuisce dalle immagini che ho inserito. Il suo orientamento è opposto a quello della basilica e l'altare si trova di fronte alla grande abside. Ultime immagini in b.n. dalla cripta per mio diletto prima di risalire nel presbiterio, buona visione a tutti.
