Un uomo con il volto consumato dal tempo tiene tra le mani una botticella che, attraverso una cannella, versa l'acqua in una vaschetta semicircolare: è la piccola Fontana del Facchino, oggi addossata al muro di Palazzo De Carolis su via Lata ma fino al 1872 situata su via del Corso. La fontana rappresenta un “acquaiolo” con il tipico vestito indossato nel Cinquecento dai portatori d'acqua o facchini, che di notte riempivano botti e botticelle con l'acqua attinta dal Tevere o dall'antica Fontana di Trevi per distribuirla durante il giorno ai romani in cambio di un modesto compenso – un mestiere molto diffuso in città prima che si cominciassero a riparare gli antichi acquedotti. Attribuita per un breve periodo addirittura a Michelangelo, la fontana fu forse commissionata dall'Università degli Acquaroli e scolpita da maestranze fiorentine su disegno del pittore Jacopino del Conte. L'identità del facchino fu al centro di varie e stravaganti leggende: secondo alcuni avrebbe raffigurato Martin Lutero, che nel 1511 soggiornò nel vicino monastero degli agostiniani, secondo altri un certo Abbondio Rizzio, morto mentre trasportava un barile e citato anche in una lapide collocata a ridosso della fontana, oggi rimossa. A partire dal Seicento, insieme a Pasquino, Marforio, l'abate Luigi, Madama Lucrezia e il Babuino, il Facchino entrò a far parte del Congresso degli arguti, le famose statue parlanti di Roma.
