Araschnia levana Famiglia Nymphalidae Sottofamiglia Nymphalinae Apertura alare Da 2,9 a 3,8 cm. Distribuzione in Italia Anticamente presente in Piemonte e segnalata in Val d'Aosta, Veneto e Alto Adige; attualmente confermata solo in Val Raccolana (Friuli) e nel Tarvisiano. Habitat Boschi radi dalla pianura a 900 m. Periodo di volo Polivoltina da fine aprile a metà giugno e da luglio a metà agosto. Pianta alimentare dei bruchi Urtica dioica e Urtica urens. Dimorfismo sessuale Femmina simile al maschio, ma più grande e con ali più tozze e arrotondate. Nella prima generazione presenta disegni neri meno estesi. Variazioni La differenza nel disegno delle ali delle due generazioni è notevole. La forma prosa, con cui viene chiamata la seconda generazione, è scura con una banda bianca che attraversa entrambe le ali e più larga nelle femmine. In entrambe le forme (primaverile forma levana ed estiva forma prosa) si riscontrano variazioni individuali con esemplari più chiari e più scuri.
