Risalente al IV secolo, la Basilica di san Lorenzo Maggiore a Milano è una delle più antiche chiese presenti in Italia. Per le forme e le soluzioni architettoniche è anche uno dei più importanti capolavori dell'Alto Medioevo e dell'arte Paleocristiana. E' stata un modello di riferimento per la Basilica di San Vitale a Ravenna. Secondo una delle datazioni più ricorrenti fu costruita all'incirca nel 378 d.C., sotto l'Impero di Teodosio e Onorio. Si trova a Milano, in corso di Porta Ticinese. È stata intitolata a san Lorenzo, martirizzato il 10 Agosto 258 d.C su una graticola, che è divenuta poi suo simbolo. Sono state formulate alcune ipotesi sul motivo di un edificio così vasto: quella più accreditata è che fosse uno spazio sia per le cerimonie civili sia per quelle religiose, collegato al Mausoleo Imperiale; un'altra è che fosse la chiesa Palatina, per via della vicinanza al palazzo di Teodosio (in quel periodo, infatti, Milano era capitale dell'Impero). Al contrario alcuni studiosi fanno notare che la Basilica potrebbe essere identificata con la Basilica della Portiana, che fu donata agli ariani dall'Imperatore ma mai ritrovata. Si pensa che san Lorenzo sia stata costruita sui resti di un antico tempio Romano, come si può vedere visitandone le fondamenta; o forse questi resti appartenevano ad un vicino anfiteatro e furono utilizzati come materiali di spoglio. La Basilica di San Lorenzo subì diverse ricostruzioni, che ne modificarono l'aspetto. All'inizio dell'XI secolo due incendi distrussero parte della Basilica; poco dopo si fu ricostruita. All'inizio del XII secolo ci fu un crollo, e una decina di anni dopo un terremoto, perciò seguì una seconda ricostruzione. La Basilica fu poi modificata nel Cinquecento e subì lavori di restauro nell'Ottocento e durante tutto il Novecento. (da Geometrie Fluide)
