La mia visita all'eremo è terminata e nella strada del ritorno vi racconto altre due note che riguardano la storia e l'ambiente di San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. L'isolotto e l'ambiente sono considerati riserva protetta, la bellezza dell'isolotto è dovuta all'erosione degli agenti atmosferici che hanno modellato questo tratto della costa basca attraverso vento e maree. Nel corso dei secoli, è stata una postazione molto ambita vista la sua importanza strategica. Nel 1593 l'eremo fu attaccato e saccheggiato da Francis Drake. Il 10 novembre 1978 fu distrutto da un incendio. Due anni dopo, il 24 giugno 1980, fu nuovamente inaugurato. L'eremo ospita anche offerte votive di marinai sopravvissuti ai naufragi. Il luogo è la quintessenza del turismo dei Paesi Baschi, riceve migliaia di visitatori durante l'anno.
