La Basilica di Sant'Apollinare Nuovo realizzata tra la fine del V e l'inizio del VI secolo d.C. dal sovrano goto Teoderico (493-526) accanto al suo palazzo, come cappella palatina legata al culto ariano. “Re Teoderico fece innalzare dalle fondamenta questa chiesa in nome di Gesù Cristo, nostro Signore” Così recita l'iscrizione riportata da Andrea Agnello nel suo Liber Pontificalis, il libro dedicato alla storia della chiesa ravennate (IX secolo d.C.). Inizialmente dedicata al Salvatore e dedita al culto ariano, a seguito della conquista bizantina della città, la basilica fu consacrata al culto ortodosso (metà del VI secolo d.C.) e intitolata a San Martino, vescovo di Tours, che si era distinto nella lotta agli eretici. Secondo la tradizione, nel IX secolo d.C. le reliquie di Sant'Apollinare furono qui traslate dalla Basilica di Classe, e proprio in quell'occasione l'edificio ricevette la sua intitolazione a Sant'Apollinare, detta “Nuovo”.
