Ovvero la basilica dei SS. Giovanni e Paolo al Celio. Questa mattina, finalmente, sono riuscito nell'intendo di fotografarla dopo diversi tentativi nei mesi scorsi vanificati o dalla presenza di visitatori oppure dallo svolgimento di celebrazioni matrimoniali. Oggi la fortuna mi è stata particolarmente amica: oltre a poterla riprendere, come ho detto, senza la presenza di persone, ho potuto beneficiare, seppur per una manciata di secondi, anche della accensione dei lampadari! È una delle basiliche più affascinanti di tutta Roma e probabilmente è anche una delle più luminose grazie ai numerosi lampadari di cristallo pendenti dal soffitto. È una costruzione testimone di una storia a dir poco straordinaria. Fu eretta nel 398 d.C. per opera del senatore Bizante e di suo figlio Pammachio. Essa sorge nell'omonima piazza sul pendio occidentale del Celio ed è dedicata ai due ufficiali dell'esercito romano Giovanni e Paolo, ferventi seguaci della 'nova religio' che andava diffondendosi sempre più nell'impero e per questo vittime della persecuzione dell'imperatore Giuliano l'Apostata che, nel 362 d.C., li fece uccidere e seppellire nella loro stessa casa. I resti dei due Santi sono custoditi all'interno della Basilica in un'antica vasca in porfido; il luogo della sepoltura è indicato da una lastra tombale a metà della navata maggiore.
