La scena era tenerissima. Quattro cuccioli di ghepardo, di tre o quattro settimane, con ancora la loro pelliccetta grigiastra sul dorso e sul collo, erano in mezzo all'erba in una vasta area scoperta, estremamente vulnerabili ad attacchi di iene o altri predatori. La mamma li aveva lasciati per andare a caccia e loro se ne stavano lì, uno addosso all'altro a proteggersi, emettendo ogni tanto un debole verso, a metà tra il cinguettio di un uccello e il miagolio di un gatto, e guardando nella direzione in cui era scomparsa. Non potevano vederla, era troppo lontana. Era a oltre 300 metri di distanza e, dopo aver catturato un impala, lo stava trascinando sotto un albero.
