Erebia aethiops (Esper, 1777) – Famiglia Nymphalidae Sottofamiglia Satyrinae – Apertura alare - Da 3,8 a 5,2 cm. Distribuzione in Italia: Presente in tutto l'arco alpino, nelle zone collinari e in alcune località dell'Appennino in Liguria, Toscana ed Emilia. - Habitat: Limitare di boschi e ambienti cespugliosi da 100 sino a 1700 m. - Periodo di volo: Univoltina da luglio ad agosto. - Pianta alimentare dei bruchi; Varie graminacee tra cui quelle dei generi Festuca, Poa, Bromus, Anthoxanthum, Carex, Briza, Dactylis, ecc. - Dimorfismo sessuale: La femmina ha dimensioni maggiori, con ocelli vistosi e rovescio chiaro. - Variazioni: Estremamente variabile per dimensioni ed estensione della zona fulva attorno agli ocelli. - Specie simili: Alcune femmine di Erebia euryale, con riduzione delle macchie bianche sul rovescio delle ali posteriori, possono essere confusi con Erebia aethiops, ma in E.euryale le frange sono nettamente a scacchi chiari e scuri. Caratteristica della maggior parte di individui di Erebia aethiops è la strozzatura del contorno rossastro attorno agli ocelli dell'ala anteriore, tra i primi due e il terzo, che fa assumere al disegno rossastro la forma di un otto.
