La chiesa di Sant'Agnese in Agone sorge già a partire dall'VIII sec. d.C. sul lato occidentale di piazza Navona, l'antico Stadio di Domiziano. L'edificio fu edificato sul luogo in cui, secondo la tradizione, la giovane cristiana Agnese subì il martirio, durante le persecuzioni di Diocleziano. L'attuale costruzione fu iniziata da Girolamo e Carlo Rainaldi nel 1652, sotto Papa Innocenzo X, e ultimata da Francesco Borromini (1653-57), che la modificò sensibilmente, determinando la facciata concava a ordine unico di pilastri e colonne, sormontata dall'alta cupola; i campanili gemelli, su disegno di Borromini, furono realizzati da Antonio Del Grande e Giovanni Maria Baratta. Il committente Innocenzo X Pamphilj e altri membri della famiglia sono sepolti all'interno di una cripta, posta a sinistra dell'altare maggiore. L'interno, a opera del Rainaldi, conserva la pianta a croce greca e si segnala per lo splendore di ori e marmi. La cupola, sorretta da otto colonne, fu affrescata da Ciro Ferri, mentre i pennacchi sono opera del Baciccia. Il sotterraneo, ricavato da un antico oratorio medievale, ospita sull'altare Il miracolo dei capelli di Sant'Agnese, rilievo marmoreo di Alessandro Algardi.
