I Vangidi sono una grande eterogenea famiglia di passeriformi endemici malgasci, vagamente simili alle averle africane e asiatiche, caratterizzati da una grande diversità di forme del becco adattate ai diversi ambienti e tipi di alimentazione. Nel mio recente viaggio in Madagascar sono riuscito ad osservare 17 delle 21 specie di Vangidi endemici dell'isola. Il soggetto più ambito ed uno dei principali target del viaggio era senza dubbio la Vanga dall'elmo (Euryceros prevostii), una specie bellissima caratterizzata da un grande e colorato becco, la cui popolazione scarsa e frammentata è presente in un range molto limitato, quasi esclusivamente nelle foreste pluviali costiere del parco nazionale di Masoala, ed è perciò considerata a rischio di estinzione (classificata EN nella lista rossa IUCN). Nella settimana che abbiamo trascorso in questo luogo remoto sono riuscito a vederla due volte e a realizzare qualche buono scatto, come questo che ritrae una femmina con pullo al nido.
