Gli adulti di questo mefitico essere depongono fino a 100 uova alla base delle palme. Dopo la schiusa, le larve si dirigono verso l'interno della pianta, scavando gallerie, danneggiando soprattutto la zona del tronco immediatamente sottostante alla corona fogliare. Le larve si impupano in genere alla base della pianta, formando dei bozzoli ovali di fibre di palma all'esterno del tronco. Dopo l'emergenza dalla pupa gli adulti rimangono all'interno di tali bozzoli per 4-17 giorni (media 8 giorni), raggiungendo la maturità sessuale. Una singola coppia di punteruoli può dare origine FINO A 53 MLILIONI di esemplari nell'arco di 4 generazioni (fonte: Wiki) . A me hanno distrutto recentissimamente una grande palma ultracentenaria ed altre quattro sono sotto attacco.
