La Casina delle Civette, dimora di Giovanni Torlonia jr. fino al 1938, anno della sua morte, è il risultato di udi trasformazioni e aggiunte apportate alla ottocentesca Capanna Svizzera che, collocata ai bordi del parco e nascosta da una collinetta artificiale, costituiva in origine un luogo appartato rispetto alla residenza principale. Ideata nel 1840 da Giuseppe Jappelli su commissione di Alessandro Torlonia, si presentava come un manufatto rustico con paramenti esterni a bugne di tufo ed interno dipinto a tempera ad imitazione di rocce e tavolati di legno. Dal 1916 l'edificio cominciò ad essere denominato "Villino delle Civette" per la presenza della vetrata con due civette stilizzate tra tralci d'edera, eseguita da Duilio Cambellotti già nel 1914, e per il ricorrere quasi ossessivo del tema della civetta nelle decorazioni e nel mobilio, voluto dal principe Giovanni, uomo scontroso e amante dei simboli esoterici. Nel 1917 l'architetto Vincenzo Fasolo aggiunse le strutture del fronte meridionale della Casina, elaborando un fantasioso apparato decorativo in stile Liberty. Gli spazi interni, disposti su due livelli, sono tutti particolarmente curati nelle opere di finitura; decorazioni pittoriche, stucchi, mosaici, maioliche policrome, legni intarsiati, ferri battuti, stoffe parietali, sculture in marmo mostrano la particolare attenzione del principe per il comfort abitativo.
