Innanzitutto si può dire che il nome “Ispuligidenie” precede nel tempo quello di “Cala Mariolu”: perché il primo è quello dato dai pastori di Baunei che frequentavano l'entroterra, mentre il secondo è stato imposto dai pescatori ponzesi che all'inizio del Novecento si stabilirono a Cala Gonone e Arbatax. “Ispuligidenie” deriverebbe infatti da “su pulige de nie”, che in sardo baunese significa letteralmente “le pulci di neve”, poetica metafora utilizzata dai pastori della zona per definire i candidi ciottoli levigati dalle onde di cui è composta la spiaggia, e che probabilmente, in seguito, è passata ad identificare l'intera foresta che sovrasta la spiaggia. “Cala Mariolu”, invece, più prosaicamente, significa “cala del ladro”, e tale definizione si deve ai pescatori ponzesi, che nel loro dialetto di derivazione napoletana chiamavano “o mariuolo” (“il ladro”) la foca monaca (un tempo assidua frequentatrice di questo tratto di costa) perché questa “rubava” il pesce direttamente dalle reti calate dalle barche. In breve tempo il termine venne sardizzato con la “u” finale, e da allora “Ispuligidenie” cominciò ad essere chiamata anche “Cala Mariolu”.
