Questo splendido Saturnidae,originario del Madagascar, si adatta benissimo al nostro clima mediterraneo nutrendosi, allo stadio larvale, di parecchie piante fra le quali l'oleandro. Una caratteristica di questa specie è quella di spiegare le ali inferiori e mostrare i vistosi ocelli da qui il soprannome),quando si sente minacciata o in pericolo,a tal punto da spaventare anche gli uccelli.
